The Falling Asleep of John V. Pappas

John V. Pappas December 14, 1929 - February 18, 2023 John V Pappas died peacefully in his sleep at Arbor Acres with family by his side on Saturday, February 18th after a brief illness. Born December 14, 1929 at the Baptist Hospital when it was one of the four story buildings on South Hawthorne Road,  the son of Vasilios Apostolous and Evangelia Kalyvas Pappas.     At Reynolds High School he played Clarinet in the marching band and also played at the Home Moravian Church for Easter Sunrise Services and at summer concerts at Salem Square.  Refreshments were provided by Welfare Drug Store which was next to the original Krispy Kreme doughnut store.  He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until interrupted by active duty in the United States Navy. After discharge he opened the Rathskeller in June, 1956, in the basement of his family restaurant on Reynolda Road and across from Hanes Park on the first day of school for Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

The Falling Asleep of Mr. George William Beskas

George William Beskas October 13, 1932 - February 12, 2023 It is with great sorrow, yet with hope in the Resurrection that we announce the falling asleep of Mr. George William Beskas.  Mr. George William Beskas, 90, of Clemmons, N.C. passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023. George was born in Nemea, Corinth, Greece. At a young age, George came to the states to reside with his Uncle Nick Beskas in Greely, Colorado. Upon graduating from high school, George enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Intrepid and USS Coral Sea as an electronics technician. Following his discharge, George utilized his GI Bill and worked part-time to earn his Electrical Engineering degree from the Central Institute of Technology in Missouri. Following graduation, George gained employment at Martin Marietta in Denver, Colorado as an instrumentation engineer for a research and development program, developing the intercontinental Titan I & II ballistic missiles. The Falling Asleep of Sophia Aslanis

Sophia Aslanis January 30, 1935-January 4, 2021 Sophia Aslanis (birth name: Pearlie Leigh Caudle) January 30, 1935-January 4, 2021 87 years old, of Winston-Salem, NC died January 4th 2023, after suffering from complications from several strokes and diabetes. Sophia was born January 30, 1935 to Pleas H. Caudle (schoolmaster and farmer) and Margaret Mickles Caudle(homemaker) in Yadkin County. She was raised on the family farm and went to Forbush High School.  Afterwards, she lived with older sisters, Jettie Mae and Fidella Caudle, before marrying beloved husband, Pete G. Aslanis in 1954. After she and her husband retired from Simos Bar-B-Que Inn, and Sam Pappas' Tavern on the Green in Winston-Salem, Mom spent most of her time with her daughter and friend, Margaret Aslanis Nystrom, and grand-daughter Tina Nystrom. It was very common for Sophia and her daughter to call each other several times a day every day. The three of them enjoyed each other'
