Concerning Triodion

Triodion is the ecclesiastical book which contains the Holy Services of the Church, which begins with the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee and ends on Holy Saturday. Triodion is also the ecclesiastical period that we use the book of the Triodion. The Triodion mainly covers 3 different times: 1) the pre-lenten period, 2) Holy & Great Lent, and 3) Holy Week.

The Triodion is also called the "compunctionate Triodion", because the hymns are full of compunction, and its main theme is Repentance as the ONLY path to Salvation. In other words, the period of Triodion is the most appropriate of the whole ecclesiastical year, where we are called upon to reclaim the opportunities to experience the great Mystery of Repentance.

Finally, the purpose of Triodion is to prepare us, through humility, repentance, confession, more frequent prayer, philanthropy, fasting, spiritual struggle against our weaknesses, and more frequent participation in the Holy Sacraments and Church Services, in order to welcome and experience, as much as we can, wholeheartedly the Holy Resurrection of our Lord and Savior God, Jesus Christ.

Hymnology of Sunday of Publican and Pharisee (1st Sunday of Triodion).

O Giver of Life, open to me the gates of Repentance; for early in the morning my spirit seeks Your Holy Temple, bringing the temple of my body all defiled. But, in Your Divine Compassion, cleanse me, by Your loving-kindness and Divine mercy.

Brethren, let us not pray as the Pharisee, for he who exalts himself will be humbled. Let us humble ourselves before God, as the Publican did, and with fasting cry out to Him, "God, have mercy upon us sinners".

Let us ALL have a blessed TRIODION! AMEN!
