Winston-Salem- Mrs. Stella Thalassinos Mathes, 96, fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at her residence.  She was born March 28, 1927 in Samos, Greece, the daughter of Rev. Fr. George and Presvytera Maria Thalassinos. Stella studied the violin before she was married and played in the Altoona, PA. Symphony Orchestra.  She married Jimmy Mathes in 1955, a marriage that lasted for the next 67 years until his death in 2022.  She was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where she has sung in the choir since 1944.  In 2016 she received the Bishop’s Choice Award from Metropolitan Alexios for her years as a choir member and director.  She also had directed the choir at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in High Point.  Stella was a friendly person who enjoyed her home life and family.  She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmy Mathes and a daughter, Frances Nelson.  Survivors include a son, George Mathes of Winston-Salem; a sister, Dee Davis of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Rita Georgoulias (Mike) of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Nick Mathes (Maria) of Winston-Salem and many nieces and nephews.  Funeral Services will be private.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made online at https://abundant.co/wsgoc/give (select Memorials) to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N.
