The Falling Asleep of Mr. Angelo Andrew Cortessis
Winston-Salem- Mr. Angelo Andrew Cortessis, 98, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born February 10, 1925, in Mouzilou, Karpenisi, Greece, the son of Andrew and Helen Floros Cortessis. Angelo moved to the United States in 1950 after serving in the Greek Civil War as a soldier. He was married in 1954 to Evridiki Chiklistas and started his family. The former co-owner of Cloverdale Kitchen and OK Lunch. He served many people of Winston-Salem and the surrounding area. He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where he served on the Board and was a member of the Velouchi Society. Angelo was known for his gardening and lawn work and supplied "Horta" to everyone. Devoted to his family, he was always giving and humble. One of his favorite things to do was to share his stories about growing up in Greece and at family gatherings perform with his musical instruments. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Demetri Cortessis, Irene Carros, Maria Andrews and Constantina Xenakis. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Evridiki; two daughters, Helen Gallins (Teddy) of Winston-Salem and Ellie Giannopoulos (Evangelos) of Long Island, NY; a son, Andrew Cortessis (Kelli) of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Maria Drosinis (Vasili), Paul Gallins (Zena), Victoria Saldiveri (Matthew), Nicole Phipps (Basil), Evan Cortessis (Lauren Malan) and Dean Giannopoulos and three great grandchildren, Eleni Gallins, Zoe Gallins and Chloe Saldiveri. A Trisagion and Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Fr. George Kouzelis and Rev. Fr. Constantine Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
